Last words.

I feel cheesy for writing this and I may not be sure who will be reading this AHAHAHA but I find it a necessity to do so.

For a whole year in this semester, I have to say it has been a pleasant journey with everyone. I have no regrets taking this Foundation, and never had I hoped I would be in another batch instead. I have made many pleasant memories, had bumps and thorns along the way but that's alright! We learn right-
Credits to Ryan for the photo :)

I have made such wonderful wonderful friends, each and one of you are like pearls in a clam, unique in your very own way. Keep shining and never lose your flair !! To the lecturers, yes Mr.Charles, Mr.Ernesto, Mr.Sean, Ms.Tess, Miss Natasha, Mr. Steven and many more I am honored to be your student I have learned many things and pretty much became much more open than how I used to be, you all pretty much opened my eyes to the endless creativity and fun and how differently we can see and perceive the world. You could say now I view things very differently and i remember.. my gestalt.. and principle of design.. and perspectives much..better now... AHAHHAA.

I may not be the nicest person to hear from, thanks to how I dont filter my words but whatever I have to say in this blog is sincerely from my heart. I guess I express myself better non-verbally, and through text instead of saying things so I really am sorry for the harsh things I say sometimes, I just really need to learn to watch what I say, or I might end up unknowingly hurt someone AAAAAAAAAAA...

O-okay enough with the feels get out of here SHOOO ---//hides face in shame..

The artist the we have picked and interviewed on is Mr. Jailani Abu Hassan, who is also fondly known as 'Jai'. A remarkable and talented Malaysian Artist that is currently a lecturer in UiTM. Lots of thanks to my crew for the hard work to produce this documentary and I hope you find this an inspiration to watch!

Enjoy~<3

Now I shall present to you our Final Product for 2D Design..

Here we have a 'DIY Homemade Roller!!'

The process can be easily read and understand if you follow left to right. Picture worth a thousand words yes?
T U T O R I A L

Materials :
- toilet rolls
- paint roller
- craft foams (available at arts and crafts store)
- super glue / UHU glue
- blade
- gesso (can be substituted with white acrylic)
- chinese Ink

1. Pick out any leaves you desire and would like to use in your wallpapering idea.

2. Kick start yourself by collecting unused but useful materials such as toilet rolls, paper box and etc. To ensure your roller hardens and does not change shape as easily, brush some gesso and coat a few layers. As gesso are pricey you can always coat with acrylic instead. Gather the other materials as well !

3. Carefully coat the leaf with the Chinese ink and press it down onto the craft foam so that you get the texture imprinted onto it.

4. After that, cut out the shapes carefully, emphasizing on the details of the leaves to leave a more intriguing and delicate texture.

5. Test out your cut outs to make sure you have your desired shape!

6. When you're satisfied, you can glue your cut out on the roller and test run the rolling again and voila you are done!. You can now attach your roller onto a paint roller!

AHa. what explanation - _ -

We can use shapes and color to convey emotion.

Colors have intrinsic associations with real world things, and these are mostly universal and very ‘primal’ - fire, sun, water, night.

Round shapes are perceived as safe, welcoming, organic; spiky, pointed shapes imply danger, action, excitement; horizontal shapes are stable and calm; vertical shapes are exciting, giving a sense of movement or scale; diagonals imply motion, change and dynamism.

Remember how we used Molly Bang’s visual retelling of the Red Riding Hood story to demonstrate some of those principles?

Size - does RRH feel less powerful in the woods if we make her smaller?
Shapes - more pointy triangles makes the wolf a great deal more menacing than a curvy wolf.
Values - which is more scary, a forest in broad daylight, or at twilight?

Horizontal and vertical shapes together don’t imply much motion. It’s a pretty calm scene in here:
Picture
But add in diagonals and all of a sudden:

Values are how dark or light something is on a black to white scale. It’s a common rule of thumb in illustration that if you plan an image that reads well using only three or four values (black, grey, white) (black, near black, near white, white), most of the time it will continue to read well after you add color to it.

Where do you put different objects in an image? There is ‘gravity’ in pictures - we associate the top of a picture with freedom, lightness, while objects near the bottom of a frame are perceived as stabler.

Silhouettes are images of an object that are filled it with a solid color and whose edges are the outline of the object as we would have seen it in space. We read silhouettes before we read any details, and our minds fill in any missing information. A clear silhouette will ensure what your audience is able to quickly grasp whatever you are trying to show them, so if your goal is clarity, position the elements in your image such that a clear and distinct silhouette for the focal elements can be seen. Especially in animation, when characters are only in a specific pose for a very short duration, they need to read clearly to the audience.

This is my silhouette story, I have followed the Japanese Manga Style panelling, which is read from right to left. The left side is the 1st page and the 2nd page is on the right.

As you can see I have used the idea of silhouette based on a NDS game I have played before named "Rub Rabbits"

Its extremely cute AHAHAH
I really love the concept and that was why I used it in my silhouette idea.
I will now begin my story. The title of my story is "Peace" which in a way means what kind of peace? a feeling? I remember a friend of mine and I shared and created this story together because we were fond of doing so. So I hope my message passes through on the true meaning of the comic.

A boy takes a route he never took before to school, and never had he noticed in his lifetime a bridge by the corner of the road. There however stood a elderly lady, who seemed panicky and lost. Out of empathy he went over to ask her if she needed any help.

The lady replied with a point over the bridge, and says she is afraid of going the alone, fearing that she will fall. She seemed like she really needed to get past there so he offered himself to help her pass. Carrying her on his back he carefully stepped past the shaky bridge onto the opposite side. Carefully setting down the lady, he smiled. The lady seemed happy and thanked him over and over. He could not get why was she so happy so he dismisses himself and hurriedly went off to school.

A few days have passed and he no longer need to use the pathway, but on sudden remembrance he asked his friend about the bridge. His friend appeared puzzled and asked in return.. what bridge? He got confused and decided to go there and see by himself and prove to his friend about this. He went back there and to his surprise he sees a  run down and broken bridge. Tall grasses covered the place, as if it was never touched for a long long time. He walked closer and noticed a small stone hidden behind the tall grasses. He kneels to see what it was. His eyes widened as he sees a picture of an elderly woman whom he have met a few days ago, and she was smiling sweetly in the picture, exactly like how she did to him. He then knew, he helped her cross the path, to peace.

"it was a few decades ago when an elderly woman was passing through the very bridge, when the ropes snapped and came down falling."

So in my context, the peace meant.. rest in peace.

A tiling of regular polygons (in two dimensions), polyhedra (three dimensions), or polytopes ( dimensions) is called a tessellation. Tessellations can be specified using a Schläfli symbol.

awh hell no, dreaded paper cutting i swear--

These are the paper cuttings I did based on the Principles of Design  \ o /

Picture
Asymmetrical design is typically off-center or created with an odd or mismatched number of disparate elements. However, you can still have an interesting design without perfect symmetry.

(missing piece - did this on computer instead to fill up)

Picture
If the center is what you first look at in this picture, you have just seen the DOMINANCE effect : )

as DOMINANCE is about the focus given to a part of a work of art.

Picture
Rhythm or repetition is the expression of visual harmony within a design.

It is expressed here by repeatedly creating crescent lines in a circular motion, to produce a wave.

Picture
Motion or movement in a visual image occurs when objects seem to be moving in a visual image.

The leaves has been carved out to make it look as if its moving, almost creating an illusion of being blown by the wind ;)

Picture
Hierarchy is the order of importance within a social
group (such as the regiments of an army) or in a body
of text (such as the sections and subsections of a book).
Hierarchical order exists in nearly everything we know,
including the family unit, the workplace, politics, and
religion. Indeed, the ranking of order defines who we
are as a culture.

<    As you can see, the hierarchy of the size is made.

Picture
Repetition in nature is a common sight, from schools of fish to forests of trees, patterns of leaves to spores on a mushroom. The important thing to notice with natural repetition is the presence of variation.

Scale is the size of an element as it relates to its usual physical size.

STEAMPUNK

"Steampunk is a sub-genre of speculative fiction, usually set in an anachronistic Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history setting. It could be described by the slogan "What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner." It includes fiction with science fiction, fantasy or horror themes.

Medieval Steampunk: Speculative fiction set during the Middle Ages.

Victorian Steampunk: A modern Science Fiction work (post-1930s) that is set in the early parts of the industrial revolution.

Western Steampunk: Science fiction set in the American Old West.

Industrial/Modern Steampunk: Science fiction taking place in the late industrial age, early modern age; i.e. World War 1, World War "

Before we dive into the history  of what we know as Steampunk, the definition(above) would be the first thing that we must define right? And therein lies the first obstacle for anyone trying to get a grip on the concept as there are many differing opinions about what constitutes Steampunk. Because. This is difficult. Very difficult. Takes alot of energy and effort to research yo.

Many people simply see Steampunk as a genre of speculative fiction, covering a small  variety form of novelsfilmscomics and other popular media. Other people see Steampunk as an entire sub-culture, such as – fashion, music, and culture(cosplay in particular). Simply said, “Steampunk is what happens when Goths discover the color brown”. Plus, it might also be the collision of Victorian-era high fashion with rivets and brass and clockwork, an often-extraordinary arts and crafts scene with a firm emphasis on DIY, is what we sometimes see or encounter in our modern lives.

Finally, and at the extreme end of the spectrum, there are some who consider Steampunk a kind of counter-cultural “movement” – a mindset and philosophy that moves beyond the simple trappings of fashion and scene, and becomes a way of life. These are folks who you might hear throwing around odd sub-sub-genre handles like “Dieselpunk” or “Biopunk” or “Gaslight”.

These people take their Steampunk seriously.

oh.

Before I forget, I would like to share a little something extra for this topic. During in between school and home, I have designed a steampunk-themed character AHAHHA. Her name is Mysteria and she is a witch. A steampunk witch. She loves spiders.

I actually have been developing character designs since I was 14? Till now I have almost 35 characters ranging from different themes and concepts. This one here is actually a character I have created a while back, but I decided to put her in a different era, and redesigned her.
The one on the left was my final draft before I scanned and (Computer Generate) CG-ed the artwork! Suitable modifications have been made in the process to produce the final design. This one here of course was my first design back in June, 2010.
Har har de har har my drawings still suck back then.
YEP. This is the redesigned version.
These are my main references and inspirations :3

Hope you enjoyed!

“Perfume was first created to mask the stench of foul and offensive odors...
Spices and bold flavorings were created to mask the taste of putrid and rotting meat...
What then was music created for?
Was it to drown out the voices of others, or the voices within ourselves?
I think I know.”

THE MASK?!?!

or a mask that conceals your face..

A protection mask?

so how many masks are there.. really?

From what I researched and know, a mask typically is an object that is worn on a individual's face, most commonly for face treatment, performance, entertainment, disguise, protection. Masks have been used in other means such as in cultural and ritual, theatrically, functional, fashion and also disguise. Masks also have a psychological meaning in association with disguise which I will share with you, in a psychological point of view. I'm crazy over these psychological things so I really dug deep into this topic.

The Persona.
Psychologist Carl Jung refers this mask to be a 'persona'. The latin word personae means ‘mask’, and was used to describe the masks worn in ancient Greek plays. It is a mental mask that a person wears depending on what situation they are placed in and how they feel they need to act to deal with it. Although it’s described as a mask, by no means is donning a persona considered to be hiding from the truth. A persona takes an important aspect of that person’s true identity and it blends with a social identity to fit in. People tend to naturally become slightly different people based on their surroundings. One can tell the difference by themselves, most of the time. At home, perhaps you're more anti social and quiet. At school, perhaps you are a social butterfly and you like to be around your friends. Imagine if one day it becomes reversed, then you'd socially isolated and detached from everyone in school. Everyone has their own set of persona to help them belong in the world and interact with others, so how could you be sure you don't wear one?

The Shadow
The polar opposite of the persona is the shadow. It represents every thought or feeling in our heads, usually of a vulgar, shameful, or corrupt nature, the shadow is formed when one cannot uphold one's idea of oneself. We reject the shadow because these thoughts take us farther away from this ideal self. Carl Jung called it shadow purposely to represent the duality of the shadow and persona, to hint at the darkness it brings, and to show that the shadow will always exist. You can’t have light with shadows. So how do you live a happy life with a shadow looming around? Carl Jung says you just have to accept your shadow…therefore, accept your darkest thoughts.

~
Have you attempted to "put on a brave face" or "mask your feelings?"

Everyone wears a mask at one point in their lives. It's something inevitable, and its not wrong. We often put a fake smile on our faces and act like nothing is wrong. We hide behind a concerned face, and make people believe we're listening. So..

Why do we wear these mental masks?
Why is it difficult for us to say what we want?
Are the masks imposed on us?

YES, We often wear it for self protection. Masks help us build our own defenses., they give us the power.. or at least the illusion of it at times when we feel powerless.  Sometimes we wear a mask to shield ourselves from getting hurt. We've been proverbially attacked countless times from acts of deceit and betrayal. I'm sure we can all relate to that, yes? We fear rejection. We fear someone will make fun of us for what we hold believe in, also in what we think or feel. Desperately, we all try to fit into the society. We're born into the world naked and exposed, totally vulnerable and dependent on people around us. Masks change appearances and disguise our weaknesses. With our mask, we forge a display of confidence. A mask gives us an opportunity to become something more attractive.  But which would be worse? Losing ourselves to the mask or not being able to remove it? The bittersweet truth is that there may come a time when we cannot remove a mask without removing some of our own skin.

Does it ring a bell? ;)
